16th March 2018 Newsletter
Hello Everybody,
We have had Science Week this week thanks in great part to Miss Ahern our science lead. The children have been wearing their white lab coats all week and look like little boffin scientists!
The week started off with Miss Ahern leading a whole school staff assembly on Monday all to do with science and investigations, then every child had the opportunity to see and use the “ Discover our World” exhibition that we set up in the infant hall. This allowed the children to really get practical with science and use some equipment. We have had a special science week poster competition and some great investigations going on in classrooms. There is so much to see in the classrooms that we are having a science open afternoon for parents to come in and have a look round the school at our science work. As well as having the opportunity to experience some science, they will also celebrate their child’s scientific achievements. The school will be open from 3:30pm this afternoon for this event.
As well as all the science Year 5 and year 6 have visited Chatham library to see and hear the readings of books by a local author. This is a bit of a precursor to book week which we are having here at St Michael’s next week. The infants will be studying the books of Julia Donaldson such as the Gruffalo etc and the junior children will be studying the plays of Shakespeare. “Dress up as a Book Character” will be on Friday 23rd March to draw our celebrations to a close.
It was great to see so many mums come in to read with their children for our “Read with Mother” celebration last Friday for mothers day– everywhere I looked I saw mums reading with their sons and daughters managing to read with all of their children no matter what class they were in. Well Done, we have sent pictures to the Medway Messenger so we will see…
As a staff we all had some training and an insight into the science behind “Forest School” it was lovely to go up there as a group of adults and see what the children can experience and to hear how going into our Forest has impacted on our children. Thanks to Mrs Champ all of our children since January have had 3 sessions in the forest regardless of the weather– we have “Forest Day” every day here at St Michael’s so lets get out there.
Have a great weekend Mrs Kathy Sexton
